About Romania

Romania’s origin date back to Ancient history; in 106 A.D., when the Romans, impressed by this rich territory (inhabited by Thracian tribes), conquered it and made it part of their empire. Three major principalities, Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania, bounded by a common language, survived to all attacks and managed to reunite progressively - Walachia and Moldavia in 1859, the resulting country and Transylvania in 1918, after First World War.

The Communist regime, installed shortly after the Second World War, imposed a radical change in the Romanian society, while its fall in December 1989 through a very painful revolution, brought Romania close to the European values.

Since 2007 Romania is member of the European Union. Erasmus exchanges began way earlier, 1998, allowing students from this country to study abroad and also inviting foreign young people to discover the Romanian educational system.

Romania is divided into 41 counties (județe, pronounced judets) and the municipality of Bucharest.
